University of Virginia Library

A special meeting of the Board of Visitors of The Rector and Visitors of the University of
Virginia was called by the Rector on this date half an hour after the adjournment of the
regular monthly meeting, with the following present: The Rector, Barron F. Black, President
Colgate W. Darden, Jr., and Visitors Barksdale, Coxe, Dunn, Gravatt, Gray, McWane, Mears,
Mrs. Smith, Mr. Smith, Talbott, and Wheeler. Absent: Visitors Emmett and Howard.

APPEAL OF DISCIPLINED STUDENTS

The Rector informed the Board that attorneys for the expelled and suspended students
had requested an opportunity to appeal the cases to the Board.

After President Darden read, at the Rector's request, an excerpt from the University
Cagalog that appears to obligate the Board to hear appeals from expelled students, the
Rector asked the Board to make two decisions. (1) Select a date for hearing the appeal
of the expelled students, and (2) Decide whether to hear an appeal from the students who
were only suspended.

Following the defeat by a six to five vote of Mr. McWane's motion to deny a further
hearing to the suspended students, the Board resolved (1) To hold a special meeting on
May 26th and May 27th, and (2) To hear the appeals of both the expelled and the suspended
students if all shall appeal
