GIFTS, GRANTS AND CONTRACTS

The President reported that in December, 1994, the University received $14m in gifts, the largest amount in a single month in its history. For the six month period, July 1 - December 31, the University received $34.7m, an increase of $4.9m over the same period last year. There have been significant increases in gifts to the College, the Medical Center, the Bayly Museum, the Alderman Library and the Miller Center - all reflecting good work on the part of persons involved with these entities. He cited statistics for giving in several areas and noted a few individual gifts: Mr. Richard Young of Accomac who, with his family, has given money for scholarships; Mr. David Harrison of Prince George County, who has given another $500,000, to the University Foundation; Mr. Paul Barringer who has given a total of nearly $1m to the College, the Law School and for athletics.

The President also noted a recent matching gift from the Republic of China for an endowed Chair in Asian Studies in the Miller Center; the total gift will amount to about $1m. Among other corporate and foundation gifts, and bequests, he reported a $600,000 gift from the Eagle Corporation of Charlottesville.

The report was accepted by the Board.
