ESTABLISHMENT OF NEW FACULTY RANKS FOR LIBRARIANS

The following resolution was adopted:

  • WHEREAS librarians, members of the administrative general faculty, have not, since 1987, been elected to academic professorial rank; and
  • WHEREAS it is the approved practice in most research libraries to provide a system of promotion for librarians through either academic or professional ranks; and
  • WHEREAS it is the practice in most research libraries to use the term "librarian" for those professional librarians holding faculty appointments;
  • THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the following library faculty ranks be and they are hereby established:
  • Affiliate Librarian
  • Assistant Librarian
  • Associate Librarian
  • Librarian
  • These titles would apply to all new elections of library faculty; librarians already holding professorial ranks may retain their current ranks, if they so choose.
  • These are new library faculty ranks within the category of the general administrative faculty. Library faculty will remain members of the general administrative faculty and, regarding the terms and conditions of employment, will continue to be governed by the policies pertaining to the general faculty.
