CLINCH VALLEY COLLEGE STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The following resolution was adopted:
- RESOLVED by The Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia that the following statement of institutional purpose be and it is hereby adopted for Clinch Valley College:
- Clinch Valley College is founded upon the historic commitments of the University of Virginia to excellence and service, and is dedicated to the development of sensitive, cultured, open-minded citizens who ground their thinking in facts, who are intellectually aware, who believe that life is significant, and who are concerned about society and their role in it.
- This central purpose is served by activities designed:
- (1) To quicken, discipline, and enlarge the intellectual capacities of the members of the college and to record, preserve, and disseminate the results of intellectual inquiry; and
- (2) To promote excellence in instruction leading to baccalaureate degrees in the arts and in the social and natural sciences -- not merely by transmitting established skills and knowledge, but by developing their ability to think, to respond to ideas, and to question freely and interpret human institutions and experience; and
- (3) To create an intellectual and cultural center for the Southwestern part of Virginia and to stimulate the improvement and development of the area and its people.
- In concert with this central purpose, Clinch Valley College will pursue the following general institutional objectives:
- (1) To emphasize liberal arts as the foundation of of the whole college program;
- (2) To establish and maintain appropriate programs designed to serve the Commonwealth, especially Southwest Virginia;
- (3) To serve the college community and the community-at-large through special programs, lectures, drama, music, art, and library services;
- (4) To provide students with the opportunity to obtain high quality pre-professional education.
