DEGREES.

No merely honorary degree is conferred by the University of Virginia.
A Certificate of Distinction is conferred on one who has attained three-fourths
of the value of the questions at an Intermediate or a Final Examination.
For the Degrees of Proficient or Graduate, an equal or a higher
standard is demanded; these degrees, which are conferred only upon examination,
are as follows:

UNTITLED DEGREES.

1. A Certificate of Proficiency in the Class is conferred on one
who has passed examination in any of the following classes: Anglo-Saxon,
Political Economy and Science of Society, Moral Philosophy, Agricultural
Chemistry, Descriptive Mineralogy, Determinative Mineralogy, Geology,
Botany, Zoology, General Biology, Physiology, Human Anatomy, Medical
Jurisprudence, Constitutional and International Law.

2. A Diploma of Graduation in the Bachelor of Arts Course is
conferred on one who has passed examination in any one of the following
courses: Junior and Intermediate Latin, Junior and Intermediate Greek,
Junior and Intermediate Mathematics, Junior and Intermediate French,
Junior and Intermediate German, Spanish, Italian, Junior Physics, Chemistry,
History, English Literature, Modern English, Early English, Logic.

3. A Diploma of Graduation in the School is conferred on one who
has passed examination in all classes of any of the following schools: Latin,
Greek, French, German, Modern Languages (including French and German),
English Language and Literature, Historical Science, Moral Philosophy,
Pure Mathematics, Mixed Mathematics, Applied Mathematics,
Natural Philosophy, Practical Physics, Practical Astronomy, General
Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Analytical and
Agricultural Chemistry, Mineralogy and Geology, Natural History and
Geology, Biology, and Agriculture.

ACADEMICAL DEGREES WITH TITLES.

1. The degree of Bachelor of Arts of the University of Virginia
is conferred upon one who has graduated in the Bachelor of Arts courses in
Latin, Greek (or Logic), Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, History, French
(or Spanish, or Italian), and German (or English.)

2. The degree of Master of Arts of the University of Virginia is
conferred on one who has graduated in the Schools of Latin, Greek, Modern
Languages, Moral Philosophy, Pure Mathematics, Natural Philosophy, and
General Chemistry.

3. The degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Virginia
is conferred on one who has attained the degree of Bachelor of Arts,
or Master of Arts, and accomplished a Graduate Course in two or more
Literary Schools, or in two or more Scientific Schools.

N. B.—The candidate for a Doctorate may obtain the preliminary degree above required,
or other degree which the Faculty may deem equivalent, either at this University or at some
other chartered institution of learning: provided, however, that he shall, in all cases, have
graduated at this University in the Schools in which it is proposed to pursue Graduate
Courses. The candidate for a Doctorate is also required to prepare and have printed a fortnight
before Public Day an approved Thesis, showing independent research or original treatment
of a fitting theme from one or another, as he may elect, of the Schools in which he pursues
a Graduate course. His election of Schools is subject to the approval of the Faculty.

The graduating examinations are in all cases in writing, and the standard
is three-fourths.

PROFESSIONAL DEGREES WITH TITLES.

1. The degree of Bachelor of Law is conferred on one who has passed
examination on all the subjects of instruction in the Schools of the Law
Department.

2. The degree of Doctor of Medicine is conferred on one who has
passed examination on all the prescribed subjects of instruction in the Schools
of the Medical Department.

3. The degree of Graduate in Pharmacy is conferred on one who has
passed examination on all the prescribed subjects of instruction in the Schools
of the Pharmaceutical Department.

4. The degree of Civil Engineer is conferred on one who is a Proficient
in Mathematics, Physics, Geology, and Mineralogy (Descriptive or Determinative),
and a Graduate in Applied Mathematics, Chemistry (General or
Industrial), and Mathematics or Natural Philosophy.

5. The degree of Mining Engineer is conferred on one who is a Proficient
in Mathematics, Physics, Geology, and Mineralogy, and a Graduate
in Applied Mathematics, General and Industrial Chemistry, and Analytical
Chemistry.

6. The degree of Bachelor of Scientific Agriculture is conferred on
one who is a Proficient in Applied Mathematics, Physics, Geology, and Mineralogy,
and a Graduate in General and Industrial Chemistry, Analytical and
Agricultural Chemistry, and Biology and Agriculture.
