S. Gilley, lawyer of Aberdeen, Monroe County, Mississippi, and of his father-in-law, William
Frank Dowd, lawyer and Confederate colonel. Included are scattered letters pertaining to
slavery in North Carolina and Alabama (1825-1860); slave bills of sale (1820, 1854); and a letter concerning a slave "stranded" at Camden, South
Carolina, without sufficient funds to return home to Florence, Alabama (1825).
