This large collection of manuscripts was collected from Gabriel Johnston and Edward Wood, two owners of the Hayes Plantation in Edenton, North Carolina. The Johnston series includes numerous letters with references to slaves and free blacks (1740-1865) and the Wood series contains correspondence (1865-1875) about African Americans during Reconstruction.
