Ælla rose like the tree beset with briars,
His tall spear shining like the stars at night,
His eyes appearing like a flame of fire;
When he exhorted every man to fight,
His gentle words did move each valorous knight.

It moveth them, as hunters lyoncels;
In trebled armour is their courage dight,
Each warring heart for praise and glory swells;
Like sluggish dinning of the winding stream,
