BUILDING TO HOUSE ACCELERATOR

The President stated that the next step in the development of the University's research
program in physics was the acquisition of an accelerator. In order that an application might
be made to the Atomic Energy Commission, it was necessary for the University to commit itself
to the construction of a building to house the accelerator.

Visitor Pollock explained that the original plan, when the Physics Building was constructed,
was to house the accelerator in that building. Subsequent experience had indicated, however, that
it was much better to house the accelerator outside the Physics Building. He pointed out also
that a separate location would make the accelerator more available to other schools of the University
which might collaborate on research involving the use of this equipment. In answer to
a question by Visitor Bryan, the President stated that the plan calls for the erection of the
building for the accelerator in the general area where the Atomic Reactor is now under construction.

The following resolution was adopted

RESOLVED by the Board of Visitors of The Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia
that the President be and he is hereby authorized to allocate $100,000 from unappropriated surplus
for the construction of a tower for a 5.5 Mcv Van de Graaff Accelerator as the first step
in applying to the Atomic Energy Commission for a grant of $1,075,000 to purchase the above-named
Accelerator.
