Radio and television broadcasting in the United States have passed through four stages of development. Each stage corresponds roughly to the formal regulatory environment, [18] but formal regulatory structures are themselves determined by technological, organizational, and social developments. [19]

The dates attached to each stage are only rough approximations. Beginning dates correspond to specific developments, although the real impact of that development may not be felt for some years. Similarly, the denotation of a new phase does not usually represent a sharp departure from the previous stage.
