May 10. Jim is my Gardener — and man of
all-work about the house, yard, &c.
He is a rough blacksmith-Weaver. [but
no weaving done here since my mothers
death, in 1849] He asked me last night
for some money — said his family was
sick [they belong to the widow of my
uncle George, about 2 miles distant]
and he wanted to buy sugar, &c.

Oct. 29. Gave Jim this sum for Timothy
seed — I find that I have paid
₤1. per bus. too much, to all the
negros — the price in market £3.

Eliza (House)

May 10.  This woman is mythe nurse of my
children. She came out of my grand-
father Watson's Estate. My wife says that
during the last illness of her mother,
[my aunt, Nancy Morris] when I was
absent on a trip to Arkansas — this
woman nursed her with a fidelity &
tenderness really touching — When
the child (Tommy) saw the money,
as I was giving Jim some, (see last
page) he asked for some for Mamy
Gave him a gold-dollar for her —
