David Poe, Sr. (1742?-1816) was Poe's grandfather. He served during the Revolutionary War and in 1779 was commissioned Assistant Deputy Quartermaster General for Baltimore with the rank of major. Prior to his death, he was often refered to as "General" (Thomas,xxxvi).
