Manuscript, Valentine Museum, Richmond, Virginia; John Allan to Poe, expressing his pleasure in the fact that the Secretary of War, James Barber, has exhibited interest in poe and John sees such an interest as a possible way in to West Point. Allan asks Poe to ascertain whether his grandfather was in the Revolutionary War, which might be of some service in Edgar's admittance to West Point. Allan encloses a check for one hundred dollars.
