Summary
Manuscript, University of Virginia;
Poe acknowledges receipt of three letters from Chivers.
Apologizes for having been critical
of Chivers' writing and praises his recent work, including a poem about
Shelley. Poe also informs Chivers of having resigned from
Graham's Magazine, with work for it now in
the hands of Mr. Griswold, and of plans to resume his own Penn
Magazine project. He solicits Chivers' help in obtaining subscribers
for the latter and for financial support as a
"partner" in the same endeavor. Chivers appends a note to the letter
in which he mentions having made critical remarks about
verses published in Graham's Magazine.
He says the criticism was meant for Poe's eyes and not Griswold's.
