SCENE VIII.

Julia's Apartment.
Enter Mandeville hastily, with looks of terror, wildly casting his eyes round in search of Julia; but not perceiving her, draws the miniature he had torne from Horatio, cautiously, from his bosom' which he contemplates with exultation—she suddenly enters—and he hastily replaces it in his bosom—she starts at perceiving him, and attempts to retire, which he prevents—Alice enters weeping—
RECITATIVE—ALICE.
Ma'am, have you heard? (dear! I'm in such a taking!)
William—his honour—(my poor heart is breaking!)
Both have been murder'd!—sad's the tale they tell!
(Noise of the clank of chains without.)
William in chains! can it be possible?

Rushes off.

Julia, trembling, attempts to follow her, but is prevented by Mandeville, who endeavours to sooth the agitation of her mind—she treats his efforts with disdain—he suddenly and resolutely seizes her hand, and drops the following scroll:

“Horatio is murdered, but Mandeville will avenge his Death.”

She starts from him, disengages herself from his grasp, and wildly quits the scene—he following.
