PROLOGUE. Spoken (the First Time of its Performance) in Private.
Gentlemen, and Ladies,
Perhaps
You'll say, too rashly We proceed,
And aim to Act, before We well can Read;
That without Thought, or Conduct We advance,
And fain wou'd Move with Art, before We've learnt to Dance.

And fain wou'd Move with Art, before We've learnt to Dance.
Some Few there are may so Censorious be;
Yet still We hope, that the Majority
Will smile at our Attempt, and Infancy.
Yet still We hope, that the Majority

To You, Kind Ladies
, We our Homage pay,
And beg You'll favour This Our First Essay,
This little Sketch, This Shadow of a Play.
We Undertook It only as a Tryal,
Aud Not to please wou'd be a sore Denial.

Then, Ladies, take what follows in good Part,
And pardon Want of Scenes, Fine Cloaths , and Art;
Tho' ne're so ill perform'd—Tis doing Something,
And more Commendable at least than—Romping.
