OF VIOLETS
“Qui per Spiritum Sanctum semet ipsum obtulit
immaculatum Deo.”
O trinity, that art a bank of violets,
Of thy first breath
Came the long sigh for death!
While Mary pondereth
What may the Angel's Salutation be—
Where there is no more Time, in Trinity,
The Holy Ghost begets,
Breathing as from a bank of violets,
That sweetness blowing through the Word
By which Christ is transferred
From Man unto the spotless Host,
That to His Father offereth
Himself from the deep spiceries of death.
