[Thou to whom my soul aspires]

“With my soul have I desired Thee in the night.”

Thou to whom my soul aspires,
Fain to serve and fain to see,
Answer, answer her desires,
Born of Thee, Lord,—born of Thee.
When the shroud of darkness falleth
At the midnight, when men sleep,
Oft my heart to Thy heart calleth,
As deep calleth unto deep.
Where art Thou? O would Thy goings
And Thy dwelling-place I knew
Well, as Thy love's overflowings
Dropping on the world like dew.
Spirit, in whose thought abideth
Life, and place, and time, and will;
Holy One, in light that hideth,
Mighty Father, moving still;
Can I find Thee? Shall I know Thee
Even in heaven, O Thou all-fair?
Ay, in Christ's face Thou wilt show Thee,
I shall see Thee,—Thou art there.
