Garnered Grain

Shepherds of Bethlehem, guide our steps,
As angels once of old
Led yours in that mysterious night
To the Chief Shepherd's fold.
Lest 'mid the mists of earth
We lose our way.
Shine on, soft star, above these plains
And lead us to the home
To which in lowly majesty
The Son of God has come.
Shine on, shine on.
Inscribed upon that manger see
Written in words of mystery,
“God manifest in flesh.”
Still clear and fresh
The letters seem: still bright and fair
As when first written there.
With quiet heart the year we take,
And with no stern foreboding break
The fast-closed crimson seal.
For Love's own impress it doth bear,
And Love's own hand hath written there
Whate'er the secret parchment shall reveal.
Swiftly and surely doth the closing year
Wind to its snowy height and disappear;
“But Thou remainest,” evermore the same,
“And Thy years fail not”—blessed be Thy Name!
Take heart, thou shalt not cross again
The billows that are past:
Take heart! Far o'er the solemn main
We sight the land at last!
On, on! The waves which lie before
Are those which lave the golden shore.
