“THE SHADOW OF PETER.”
Where'er his saintly shadow passing fell,He scattered healing virtue unawares;
Through crowded streets a silent charm he bears
And sick folk from their couches start up well.
Earth has not wholly lost that gracious spell;
Not vainly, wheresoe'er a Christian fares,
He casts a shadow, by the deeds and prayers
And noiseless influence which about him dwell.
Would I a useful, healing shadow throw,
Let me be found still walking in the sun—
Christ shining sweetly on the way I go,
Until the restful goal of life is won;
And may the world some lingering traces show
Of my day's work e'en when the day is done!
