“LORD, TEACH US TO PRAY.”

Luke xi. I.
A dark enigma is our life
Without Thy guiding ray;
Then calm, O Christ, its sordid strife
By teaching us to pray.
Prayer is Heaven's torch when doubts and fears
With darkness cloud our way,—
Its holy radiance guides and cheers,—
What peace it brings to pray!
Oft lies our path through pain and woe
While in Earth's night we dwell,
Yet prayer is still a light to show
That aye Thou leadest well;

So when Life's mysteries distress,
And Sorrow bars our way,
We plead that Thou wouldst make it less
By teaching us to pray.
