In praise of Wine.

Cease to argue, for they err,
That sententiously severe
Dispraise the noble Wine:
'Tis the sober part of the World that is mad,
That musing and sad,
Defames the Juice of the Vine.

From high Example taught;
Lest Nature surpriz'd to hear Gravity cant,
Should Arguments want,
To convince the Formal Coat.
Turks forbid this pleasing Cup,
Forfeit Heaven to drink it up,
And swill Abonination:
For their Conquests untill'd, where Nectar did flow
Most plainly do shew
Their Prophets Impolitic Passion.

Which Mortals all admire:
By whose Charms they have given to Bacchus the praise,

Loyal Wine no Treason hatches,
But inspiring Odes and Catches,
Still provokes to new Delights:
'Tis Food is the Rebel, & your Gluttons are they,
That Vulture-like prey
Upon their Princes Rights.
For with vain and idle grudges,
To presume as Princes Judges
Of Princes Acts to Reason;
Is a Boldness so high and so void of Religion,
That Coffee less Stygian
Nere vented fouler Treason.
