SONNET.

LIFE is a conflict, and with evil powers,
Against whose forceful, and insidious sway,
Our faculties, tho' rang'd in firm array,
Avail but little, in those trying hours,
When apt occasion, with a screen of flowers,
Darkens, in reason's eye, the visual ray:
Then resolution drops, in quick decay,
A giant, buried in his falling towers!

Thy aid alone, to man thou friend divine!
Can lead his mind, as restless as the deep,
Best to resolve, and best resolves to keep:
Gracious Redeemer! let thy law benign
Fixt in my heart, with guardian lustre, shine!
And guide me, till I sink to sacred sleep!
