An Epistle in Verse, occasioned by the death of James Boswell, Esquire

of Auchinleck -- Addressed to the Rev. Dr. T. D. By the Rev. Samuel Martin

collapse section

Yes, Boswell's character had been as good,
Nor less befitting culture, prospects, blood,—
Had the peculiar been less divulg'd;
Had eccentricity been less indulg'd;
Had he a busy mind restrain'd in time,
And check'd his promptitude in prose and rhime;
From just restraints less keen to be from under;
Less thought, less wishing to be thought, a wonder.
