Written by the Lady Chudleigh
Chudleigh, Mary Lee (1656-1710)
[section]
[dedication]
OF KNOWLEDGE.
To the Ladies.
[O let us rather sink into the Earth]
[Accursed Pride taught Angels to rebel]
OF HUMILITY.
[The tow'ring self-sufficient Mind]
[They whose Fire does dimly shine]
[Reproaches often useful prove]
[Such only those Delights shall share]
OF DEATH.
[Thro' the pure Æther wing'd my way]
[Where Night here sable Wings shall ne'er display]
OF FEAR.
[Let such as value Life be full of Fear]
OF RICHES.
[Me sacred Virtue moves alone]
OF SELF-LOVE.
[Love quickly would the World unite]
OF JUSTICE.
['Twould like the blest Millennium prove]
[That Bliss to which I longing haste]
OF ANGER.
[Our Days are crown'd with soft Delights]
OF CALUMNY.
[With as much Ease may Fire and Ice combine]
[Sincerity's my chief Delight]
OF LOVE.
[Ah! wretched Israel! all thy Beauty's fled!]
OF AVARICE.
[The sacred Priest the sensless Mob obey'd]
[If I'd a Fortune equal to my Mind]
[That Day, when Clangors all Divine]
OF SOLITUDE.
[Dear to the Gods Ambrosia prov'd]
[Where new and brighter Objects I shall see]
