Two bookes of epigrammes, and epitaphs | ||
77. To Captayne Roberts.
Captayne, that Conquered hast my heartBy force of Love, and truely art
To truth and innocence an ayde:
Nor art (as others) basely sway'd
By gifts or favours of the great,
In a bad cause to sweare and sweate:
While such as I (whose hearts do hold
Cleare truth, not troubled much with gold)
Of villaines wrongs might oft complaine,
Yet tune our wind-pipes still in vaine:
My strongest verse shall guard your name,
And Bulwarke it 'gainst bold defame,
Whilst you against the wracke of time,
Shall stand as Genius to my Rime.
