LYKE-WAKE.

I saw him at a banquet gay,
Elate with speech and flushed with wine:
Above the revel making way,
His eye, unwitting, answered mine.
What his expressed I did not read;
But mine, if I mistake not, said,
“This minds me of their feasts indeed
Who drain the wine-cup o'er their dead;
Who set the liquid fire to flare
Where late the spirit-flame has flown;
The sorrow still unearthed and bare
The miserable drink should drown.”
