SALEM MITCHELL.

A man of gentleness and peace
Has passed beyond our sight
To find a home where joys increase,
A land of pure delight.
His was a life of quietness,
Of patience, trust and faith;
Now changed to life of blessedness,
In triumph over death.
He was the brother and the friend,
That we might fully trust;
Seeking the truth unto the end,
To be both true and just.
He was the husband kind and true,
Who loved his wife and home;
Who strove his duty well to do,
Until his Lord should come.
He was a Leader wise and sound,
Who pointed out the way
That leads from sorrow's lowly ground
Up to the mount of day.

The truth which by experience
Was treasured in his heart,
He sought with zeal and diligence
Its essence to impart.
His joy it was to do God's will,
To follow where He led;
The mission of his life fulfill,
Sustained by living bread.
Unto the Church, that blest retreat,
Where blessings rich abound,
He daily turned with willing feet,
And satisfaction found.
His work was for the Church he loved,
Building her honor fair;
Among the lowly lived and moved,
His blessings-cup to share.
Within the dwellings of the poor
His sympathy was known;
A comforter at many a door,
When joy of life had flown.
Beside the bedside of distressed
He strove to quicken faith;
“Trust now in God, you shall be blessed,
For thus our Master saith.”

But he is gone (his loving voice
Will never greet us more);
To meet the Lover of his choice,
His Saviour to adore.
“Gone home to rest,” the Pastor said;
“The end was perfect peace.”
“He lives above; he is not dead;
His joys will never cease.”
We will not mourn like those bereft
Forever by the grave;
But joy in Christ, who record left,
And rose from death to save.
Safe home at last; we'll meet him there
Beyond the pearly gate,
Where saints are free from pain and care,
And crowns for conquerors wait.
