At a meeting of the Visitors of the University of Virginia
called for the purpose of filling the vacancies in the
Chairs of Moral Philosophy and Law, Messrs. Dew & Patton having
declined the appointment to those chairs respectively
which had been conferred upon them at a previous meeting of
the Board. Present Joseph C. Cabell (Rector) John H. Cocke,
Wm. C. Rives, Thomas J. Randolph and Andrew Stevenson.

The following proceedings were had:

1. Resolved, that Egbert R. Watson be appointed Commissioner
to settle the accounts of Alex. Garrett Bursar of the
University of Virginia and bring up those accounts from the
period of their last settlement.

2. Resolved, that the proctor be authorised to receive
a box of curiosities which have been transmitted from Siam
for the University to James C. Crane of Richmond and to repay
to him his expenses ($5.50) incurred on the same.

3. Resolved that the appointment of John L. Davis M.D.
as Demonstrator of Anatomy be confirmed.

The Board then adjourned till tomorrow morning 8 O.Clock.

Tuesday July 29th 1845. The Board met pursuant to adjournment:
Present as on yesterday: The following resolutions
were adopted.

1. Resolved.- That the Rector be authorized to have a
suitable press made for the purpose of keeping the papers of

the Board of Visitors, and that he be requested to prescribe
a suitable method of arrangement on advisement with the
Secretary.

2. Resolved, That the Proctor be instructed to repair
the privies of the University, and put them all under a regular
system of police by which they shall be daily visited &
cleansed; removing the deposits to some fixed Depot, there to
be mixed with lime or charcoal in suitable proportion to neutralize
the offensiveness of the mass, and to dispose of the
whole from time to time as it may be applied for by the neighbouring
Farmers or Gardeners, and make a yearly report of the
results to the Board of Visitors.

3. Resolved, unanimously that John B. Minor be appointed
professor of Law in the University of Virginia; and that pavilion
No.10 with the adjacent Dormitories be assigned to him.

4. George Tucker & Henry St. G. Tucker Esqrs. having resigned
their offices as Professors of Moral Philosophy & of
Law in this University, the Board of Visitors cannot take
leave of them without acknowledging the distinguished ability
with which they have discharged the duties of their respective
chairs; returning them their sincere thanks for the eminent
services they have rendered the Institution, & offering them
the best wishes of the Visitors for their individual prosperity
& Happiness.

Ordered that the Secretary of the Board enter this declaration
upon the journal and transmit a copy thereof to
each of those gentlemen.

5. Resolved, That the resolution passed July 19th 1833
authorising the professor of Law to receive a fee of twenty
dollars in addition to the fee then allowed be rescinded.

6. Resolved Wm. H. McGuffey D.D. L.L.D, be appointed
professor of Moral Philosophy in the University of Virginia;
and that Pavilion No. 9 with the adjacent Dormitories be
assigned him.

7. Resolved that the Rector in his annual communication
to the Legislature be requested to suggest the propriety of
so altering the Law establishing the University as to enable
a majority of the whole Board of Visitors to remove a professor.

The Board then adjourned sine die.
