At a meeting of the Board of Visitors held agreeably with
a previous notice of the Rector, at the University of Virginia
on Saturday the 16th Nov. 1839. Present Messrs. Joseph C. Cabell,
Wm. C. Rives, Jno. H. Cocke, & Ths. J. Randolph-

On motion- Resolved that Jos. . Cabell be appointed
Rector pro temp:

Resolved that the Proctor act as Secretary pro temp:

The Rector pro temp: having laid before the Board a correspondence
between the Rector & Doct: Henry Howard containing
an informal offer on the part of the Major part of the Visitors,
the vacant chair of Medicine for the residue of the present
session of the University, with the view of the appointment
being made permanent if the parties should think proper at
the meeting on the 4th of July next, together with the assurance
from Doct. Howard of his willingness to accept the appointment.

Resolved that Doct. Henry Howard be appointed professor
of Medicine until the end of the present session in conformity
to the proposition made informally in the letter addressed to
him on the 30th ult. by the Rector of the University.

Resolved that the Salary of Doct. Howard commence on
the 1st Inst: being the date of his letter of acceptance
agreeably to the notification in the aforesaid letter-
