MEMORIAL RESOLUTION FOR LAWRENCE LEWIS, JR.

The following resolution was adopted:

  • WHEREAS, Lawrence Lewis, Jr., was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, on July 6, 1918, and lived in Richmond most of his life; and
  • WHEREAS, Mr. Lewis was a student at the University of Virginia from 1937 to 1939, and from 1941 to 1942, during which he participated in a number of student organizations including the Football Team, Phi Kappa Sigma, and Eli Banana; and
  • WHEREAS, Mr. Lewis served the University of Virginia with great devotion in many capacities, including member of the Board of Visitors from 1960 to 1968, and from 1970 to 1978, President of the Alumni Association in 1958-1959, President of the Virginia Student Aid Foundation in 1954-1955, Trustee of the Darden School Sponsors from 1969 to 1978, and member of the Alumni Board of Trustees from 1978 until his death; and

  • WHEREAS, Mr. Lewis served his city and his state with similar devotion; and
  • WHEREAS, many organizations at the University, in Richmond, elsewhere in Virginia, and outside the Commonwealth were beneficiaries of his generosity and his wise counsel; and
  • WHEREAS, Mr. Lewis died on April 3, 1995, in Richmond;
  • RESOLVED, the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia notes with great regret the passing of Lawrence Lewis, Jr., marks with gratitude his life and his contributions to the University of Virginia, and expresses deepest sympathy to Mrs. Lewis and to their family.
