The Rector read to the Board the second paragraph of Section 4.12 of the Manual of the Board of Visitors 1966 as follows:

"Whenever the office of President becomes vacant or a vacancy is impending, the Rector shall appoint a Special Committee on the Nomination of a President from among the membership of the Board to seek and recommend to the Board a person to fill the vacancy. This special committee shall be under the chairmanship of the Rector and the committee shall consist of no fewer than five members".

The Rector advised that the Special Committee to serve as prescribed by the Manual had the following membership:

C. Waller Barrett

J. Hartwell Harrison

W. Wright Harrison

Lawrence Lewis, Jr.

William S. Potter

Donald E. Santarelli

Joseph H. McConnell, Chairman

Weldon Cooper served as the elected Secretary to the Special Committee.

In reviewing the procedures of the Special Committee, the Rector expressed his gratitude to the University Faculty Senate Committee and to the Student Committee for the valuable assistance given to the Special Committee.
