THE COMMONWEALTH PROFESSORSHIPS

The following resolution was adopted:

  • WHEREAS the 1964 Virginia General Assembly, on the recommendation of the then Governor, Albertis S. Harrison, Jr., included an item in the Appropriation Act "for attracting and retaining eminent scholars" in institutions of higher education, under the terms of which the Governor was to apportion to institutions of higher education in Virginia a sum equal to the interest earned by endowment funds created for that purpose after 30 June 1964;
  • WHEREAS this item was also included, on the recommendation of Governor Mills E. Godwin, Jr., by the 1966 Virginia General Assembly in the Appropriation Act of that year; and
  • WHEREAS the University of Virginia, as a result of this program, is now receiving income from endowment funds given to the University for this purpose, which will be most significant in attracting and retaining eminent scholars;
  • NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by The Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia that, as a mark of our appreciation to the Governor and the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia for this support, we hereby create distinguished professorships, to be known as the Commonwealth Professorships.
