REPORT ON COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The President reported in detail on the current status of the Governor's higher education bill now before the 1966 General Assembly. As passed by the House of Delegates, the bill provides for the separation of Patrick Henry College, Eastern Shore Branch, Lynchburg Branch, and the Roanoke Center from the University and their transfer to the proposed State Community College Board which will administer the State-wide system of community colleges. Also, a bill had passed the House of Delegates which provided for George Mason College to go to a four-year status with the third year of college work beginning on 1 September 1966, and for Clinch Valley College to begin the transition to a four-year college on 1 September 1968. The President proposed that the Board express its willingness to undertake the transition of Clinch Valley College to a four-year college provided the legislation as passed by the House of Delegates was finally adopted.

After discussion, the following resolution was adopted:

  • RESOLVED by the Board of Visitors of The Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia that Clinch Valley College of the University of Virginia be developed as a degree-granting division of the University and that the President be and he is hereby directed to prepare plans for this purpose to become effective 1 July 1968;
  • AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Governor, the Lieutenant Governor, the Speaker of the House of Delegates of the General Assembly, and the State Council of Higher Education.
