GIFTS TO THE UNIVERSITY
DURING 1896.

TO THE LIBRARY.

During the year 1896 numerous and valuable gifts have
been made to the Library by generous friends, their contributions
doing much to replace the great loss occasioned
by the fire. These have ranged from single volumes of
value to collections of hundreds of volumes. Among the
contributors have been private individuals, alumni of the
University, and others; publishing houses; scientific and
other learned societies; societies of alumni and kindred
bodies; other libraries, and other institutions of learning.
Acknowledgment is here made to them as follows, as well
as to any other persons or bodies whose names may have
been accidentally omitted.

Among the gifts which should especially be noted
were: The library of the late Professor Hertz, consisting
of nearly 12,000 volumes, in the department of classical
philology, from the Alumni Association of the city of New
York; 1,230 volumes from Columbia University, New
York; 485 volumes from Yale University; a considerable
number of books, not yet unpacked, from the University
of Pennsylvania; books from the Universities of Oxford
and Cambridge, to the value of £50 in each case, selected
at pleasure from the publications of the Clarendon and Pitt
Presses; a set of the publications of the Museum of Comparative
Zoölogy, Cambridge, Mass., and numerous valuable
books from the Library of the State of Virginia, Richmond.
Altogether twenty to twenty-one thousand volumes have
been presented; and, in addition, there have been several
money subscriptions to the restoration fund which the
donors have designated as specially intended for the
Library.
