Hygiene. Conduct. Morality. We are weighed down,
every moment, by the conception and the sensation
of Time. And there are but two means of escaping
and forgetting this nightmare: Pleasure and work.
Pleasure consumes us. Work strengthens us. Let us
choose.
The more we employ one of these means, the
more the other will inspire us with repugnance.
One can only forget Time by making use of it.
[57]
Nothing can be accomplished save by degrees.
De Maistre and Edgar Poe have taught me to
reason.
No task seems long but that which one dares not
begin. It becomes a nightmare.
