TREASURERS OF CAROLINE

The office of Treasurer dates to 1869. Prior to that time
the county Sheriff collected the taxes and was sheriff-treasurer.
George Marshall was the first treasurer under the new system
and was succeeded by Reuben Richerson. Together these two
men served fourteen years. They, in turn, were succeeded by
the following men: Cornelius T. Smith, show served eight years;
S. J. R. White, two years; W. R. W. Garrett, two years; W. G.
Coghill, one year; Cornelius T. Smith, twenty-eight years. Captain
Smith retired in 1923 and George Ridgley Dorsey was elected
to succeed him.
