SPECIAL COURSES IN COACHING FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL
FOR MEN, BASKETBALL FOR WOMEN, BASEBALL,
TRACK, SWIMMING FOR MEN, SWIMMING
FOR WOMEN AND PLAY GROUND
ORGANIZATION.

This year for the first time the Summer Quarter will offer courses
for coaches, beginning June 26th and ending July 24th. These courses
are offered in response to an increasing demand in our secondary
schools for men and women equipped to coach athletic teams. They
will be given by instructors of reputation and experience.

Mr. Gilmour Dobie, Head Coach in football at Cornell University,
will have general charge of the organization and direction of the classes
and will give instruction in coaching football. Mr. Dobie has a national
reputation, having been Athletic Director and Athletic Coach
at the North Dakota Agricultural College, coach in football at the
University of Minnesota, the University of Washington, the United
States Naval Academy, and Cornell. He has also had considerable
experience as a basketball player and a baseball player and played one
year of professional baseball. He is one of the most successful coaches
in the United States. His Assistant will be W. L. Lush baseball and
basketball coach United States Naval Academy, Annapolis.

Classes for women will be under the direction of Miss Emma Ody
Pohl, Director of Physical Training, Mississippi State College for
Women.

Lambeth Field, one of the most beautiful athletic fields in the East,
will be used as well as Fayerweather Gymnasium. The Redland
Swimming Club, the largest open-air concrete swimming pool in the
south, will be available to all students.

Some of the topics which will be considered are as follows:

FOOTBALL.—Discussion of rules, Training regulations, Thorough
course in fundamentals, How to play each position on a team, both
offensively and defensively, Offensive football, Defensive football, Essentials
of team play, How team play is best developed, Generalship,
A good way to teach football, Best equipment and its use.

FIELD AND TRACK SPORTS.—Rules and regulations, Different
events, The form involved in each event, Training regulations in
general, How to train for each event.

BASKETBALL.—Discussion of the rules, How to train for basketball,
How to handle the ball, How to shoot baskets, How to cage ball
from foul line, How to play each position, Offensive and defensive
team play, Importance of team play, How best to develop team play.
