To R. L. S.
Dear Louis of the awful cheek!Who told you it was right to speak,
Where all the world might hear and stare,
Of other fellows' ‘brindled hair’?
‘Shadows we are’, the Sophist knew—
Shadows—‘and shadows we pursue.’
For this my ghost shall chase your shadow
From Skerryvore to Colorado.
