THE OVERCROWDED “SLUMS” OF LONDON.
Of Evil how the leaven this vast massDoth leaven of pent-up Humanity;
Whose atoms in their contact putrefy,
Spread and ferment fungoidal, and pass
Into corruption and foul taint; e'en as
With body so with mind; till yeastily
The Human dough doth rankly rise, and high
To Heaven stink, offending God, alas!
Above, as Man below! Oh, evil case,
When Human Nature on itself doth prey!
In Childhood's very heart and open face
Sweet Purity no part hath, scared away
By brazen Vice; o'er all, the Serpent's base,
Foul trail, who doth the innocent Dove betray!
