Before they went to bed, they'd made
Arrangements for a fusillade
Of waterfowl upon a lake
Some six miles off and, for Lil's sake,
Will had proposed that she should ride
With the Professor by her side,
Saying that he would bring a gun
For him and bidding them ride on
Because the ‘trap’ would overtake
The riders ere they reached the lake,
But if they reached it first to wait
Below the hill-crest at the gate
So that the ducks might not be scared
Before the ambush was prepared.
