9. Restoration of the Rotunda
Mr. Werner Sensbach presented Mr. Louis Ballou and Mr. John Allen, who described the preliminary drawings for the restoration of the Rotunda, almost exactly as built by Thomas Jefferson. They explained that certain exceptions were necessary to preserve the structural integrity of the Rotunda and to provide such modern conveniences as an elevator and air conditioning. They reported that the dome of the Rotunda is sound and that the reconstruction work will not alter the outside appearance of the Rotunda. Mr. Allen described the methods of lighting the rooms and showed drawings to the Committee that will provide an additional floor with rooms for the Board of Visitors and the President's Office. The estimated cost of the restoration will be about 2.2 million dollars.
Mr. Ballou and Mr. Allen showed the Committee schematic drawings and renderings of the restoration. The Committee approve the plans and commended the architects for their careful work.
