ELIOT, T.S. (1888-1965):
British poet, critic, playwright, and a staunch ANGLICAN, whose poem The Wasteland (1922), crystallized the SPIRITUAL desolation and alienation following the First World War. His most successful play was Murder in the Cathedral (1935) which depicted the martyrdom of Thomas BECKETT. His essays include The Idea of a Christian Society (1939).
