THE GREAT EXHIBITION OF 1851.
Like a bright exhalation from the groundIt rose, and Wonder wondered whence, how, when;
Wondered with pencil, pen, eyes, tongues of men.
Like wingèd Mercury, Hope hover'd round,
And Iris, Heaven's messenger! Peace found
A resting-place, or thought to, there and then;
Not scared from land to land, but denizen
Of Earth, sole-thron'd, with endless olives bound!
Sweet dews from heaven refreshing fell on all
Man's faded hopes, while Peace shook from her wings,
Her gentle, dovelike wings, at every fall
And wafture, balmy drops and minist'rings.
Yes! the Prophetic Soul in great and small
Stirred the World's pulses, and to that Faith chings!
