XVII. On EPICHARMUS.

The Strain is in the Dorian Tongue:
Lo, Epicharmus!—from whose Genius sprung
Thy Numbers, Comic Muse!
O Bacchus, let this Image pass—
Tho' 'tis a Copy but of Brass,
The finish'd Semblance stands at Syracuse.
And much the State their Poet owes;
For he had Stores of useful Wit for those
Who gave the just Reward:
Full many a Rule of Life he drew,
Still pointing to the Fair, the True,
The youthful Mind: High Favor crowns the Bard.
