Summary
Manuscript, Valentine Museum, Richmond, Virginia;
Poe writes an embittered letter to John Allan. Mentioned in
the letter is Poe's departure from the University of Virginia
which he claims was caused by the inadequate funds Allan sent
him. Poe, now at West Point, states that he is in the same destitute
situation. He wants John Allan's written permission to leave West
Point so that he might retain part of the tuition to live on.
Inscribed on the letter's envelope are a few words of Mr. Allan's response.
