RICHARD GARNETT

Dr. Garnett died on the 13th April 1906. These lines were written for The Library for July in that year.

“Sit tibi terra levis!”

Of him, we may say justly—Here was one
Who knew of most things more than any other;
Who loved all learning underneath the sun,
And looked on every learner as a brother.
Nor was this all. For those who knew him knew
Though far and wide his lore's domain extended
It held its quiet Poet's Corner too,
Where Mirth and Song and Irony were blended.
1906.
