ON GOOD FRIDAY.
Dies he that lives!—does then the immortal die?Can Reason hear, nor ask the reason why?
Does he expire like frail mortality,
Whose breath is life—His days eternity?
He does—but why?—look, infidel, within;
Offended justice, and uncancel'd sin,
Each now no more—the debt eternal paid,
And full redemption—full atonement made.
“Father, forgive”—Forgive,” the spirit cries:
“'Twas man that sin'd; but 'tis thy Son that dies!”
