Seek not, dear friend, whate'er thy lot below,By magic arts thy length of life to know;
Far wiser he, who, satisfied with fate,
To Heaven resigns the period of its date.
Who fix'd the shore a girdle to the sea,
Has fix'd time's limits to mankind and thee:
Watch then the hours, for as we speak they fly,
Happy to live, but happier still to die.
