TOYNBEE, Arnold Joseph (1889-1975):
English philosopher of HISTORY and author of the multi-volume A Study of History (1934-1961) which sets out to find a pattern in historical events. In real life his loyalties swung from Marxism to Fascism to ROMAN CATHOLICISM throwing doubt on his ability to stand apart from historical events to see a greater whole.
